The AIF were the Australian Imperial Force. The AIF were expeditionary forces recruited by Australia in the First World War. Australia did not have an army of their own and took orders from the British, so the AIF was the first military force Australia had. When war started in Germany, Australia immediately supported Britain, helping declare war on Germany. The NZEF was the New Zealand Expeditionary Force which also accompanied the AIF, Which led to being known as the ANZACS (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) (History Smiths, 2001). Research shows that 331,000, men embarked from Australia with the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in the First World War and 60,000 of them were killed (Noonan, 2014).
